Forecasting

Yes, we need planning. But if you waste a lot time and resource forecasting...well, you're wasteful.

From Fed Chairman Bernanke:

WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) - As a Federal Reserve governor in 2004, Ben Bernanke, now the U.S. central bank's chairman, showed humility -- and a sense of humor -- in acknowledging a missed call about the path of inflation, transcripts released on Friday showed.

Bernanke was slow to acknowledge that inflation, after a long period of ...

More Meetings Are Necessary

If your business or organization is experiencing the stress of too much too do and too few to do everything, it's time for more meetings.

It's not time to hire a lot more people. The recovery is still fragile and you might not be seeing pre-collapse success as yet. But, you can get more done and improve internal communication by holding "speed meetings".

What's a speed meeting? Short, sweet and productive meetings. In other words, schedule 15 ...

Why Some People Subvert Success

Why do some people go out of their way to prevent success? This is a destructive pattern I see at many businesses and organizations. Fix something, improve something, build something and someone wants to take it apart. Why?

There really is only one answer to this: emotional immaturity. I used to resist the idea that someone in management would want ideas to fail. Sure, some workers might resent someone who comes up with a great idea ...

Team Issues?

99% of the time team problems can be attributed to one of two root causes: Lack of leadership or a bad apple in the bunch.

I've addressed bad apples in the past. Document the problem, inform the malcontent that they are harming the organization, have zero tolerance for negativity and nastiness and finally, if necessary, fire them. If you can't do that because of union rules, transfer them to Siberia where they can do no harm. ...

A Conundrum

I've wasted away much of this day with a very silly conundrum. But the question at hand is very interesting.

It goes like this.

A business or organization is not as productive as it should be. The talent complains that they are very hard working and dedicated and deserve more money. They make the argument that if they made more, they would produce more.

But this same group already claims to be working at their maximum capacity. They ...

What Will You Do Differently THIS Monday?

I'm posting this on Sunday. Hopefully some people will read it today. Most will read it Monday. Then, over the course of weeks, many will read this post.

When you read it doesn't matter. Apply the words to any Monday.

Monday. That's the day we're always extra busy. Mondays are accepted as the worse day of the week. No, not just because Monday is the first work day after a relaxing weekend. Many people don't have relaxing ...

Too often people bail on critical tasks on Fridays only to get 'slammed' on Monday with the loose ends of Friday. Make better use of Friday.

Are You Strong Enough to Be Different?

If you want to succeed and enjoy your work, you'll need to take chances, step out and be a little different.

You can get by by just doing your work. You'll get your annual 3% raises if you do your work efficiently enough not to draw attention. And that's exactly where most employees want to be: under the radar.

But if you're not 'most employees' and want to enjoy your work as well as do your work, ...

Why Companies Eventually Fail: Google

Let me say upfront that I am a Google AdWords customer and I am generally very pleased with their service. I have used Google's pay per click advertising for a few years and spend a few thousand dollars per month with Google.

I tried Yahoo's pay per click program, was very displeased and canceled my account after 90 days.

In spite of my general satisfaction with Google AdWords Advertising, I have had numerous billing problems. There ...
