Can Your Business Thrive with the People You Have?

A business is only as good as its people.

I could end this post right there.

Having worked with a lot of businesses and government entities, I know an organization can only do as well as the people working there will let it.

Yes. Management sets the vision and the tone. Management sets the direction. But the CEO can't be everywhere at once guiding every action of every employee. It's not possible.

Yes but...

Sorry, no buts. If a ...

     Chris.
Powerful post that touches on a challenging thought. The idea of people developing talent and using it to their ability.
Also leadership keeping their fingers out of the people skills sets to allow them to do the great work.
Too often leaders/managers allow their egos and poor skill sets to push talent away.
You are right that talented people often leave and the lucky ones find places where they can thrive and accomplish amazing things, and the company thrives along with them.

I wonder do you feel that people really can't change?
An under-performer cannot learn new skills and increase talent?
You seem to be saying that this is an intuitive skill that we are born with.

     Michael,

Don't confuse "skill sets" with values. People can learn new skills obviously. But people who are lazy will remain lazy regardless of they are taught. People with bad attitudes will always have bad attitudes. Ask any honest psychologist---people don't change---not much.

So a failed department can improve with training. But great people, real self starters would never let the department fall so low---or they would choose to leave.

Sync, Rhythm and... Blues?

Oscillation. To oscillate. To swing backward and forward like a pendulum.

In business, you can say we're all swingers, right? Actually, we all have a tone and rhythm.

Tone is sort of like mood. It's akin to tenor. You could throw style in the mix. So then, let's say these things make up business tone. Mood, tenor and style.

Some people might swing wildly on a tone scale and some mildly. Each person has an average tone. For ...

How Ideas Get Bounced Around (Brownian Thought)

Idea! I think we should offer our Zingo in red. Currently, we only offer yellow and blue.

What if red doesn't sell? (BOUNCE)
Adding red will cost us money. (BOUNCE)
We'll need new packaging. That means three different boxes. (BOUNCE)
What if red doesn't sell? (BOUNCE)
I personally don't like red. (BOUNCE)
What if the stores don't want to carry red? (BOUNCE)
No one else offers a red model, why should we? (BOUNCE)
What if red doesn't sell? (BOUNCE)
We don't have any research ...

CEO Politicians

California proclaimed its primary a great victory for women. Actually, it's the primary of the CEO.

Nothing new about that in California. The state has had many successful CEOs run for office--mostly unsuccessfully.

But before falling for the line about knowing how to run a business equates to knowing how to run a state, or anything in government for that matter, consider the CEO's world.

The CEO has virtually unchecked power. Sure, fail badly and the board of ...

Why Bad Decisions Are Made Using the Gulf Spill as an Example

Since the rig explosion that killed 11 workers and began the largest oil spill in U.S. history, thousands of ideas have been proposed to stop the leak. Today, a rather elegant possible solution came from M.I.T.

To me, whether this exact plan is the perfect solution or not is irrelevant. What matters is the source of the idea. The Obama administration has operated from a false assumption from day one: BP is most ...

Good idea! There is always some risk. But we should be taking steps with a very small chance of failure, not a chance of success. The difference is stark.

Something BP CAN Do About Their Spill Now

BP made a boo boo in the Gulf of Mexico. The boo boo is going to possibly do irreversible damage to the oceans.

We know the oil is mixing with the sea water in concentrations we can measure but not see. We know the oil has reached land and is mixing into the mud of the marshlands. That can never be cleaned up.

We know the oil is still coming up and coming up fast.  We ...

Listen Mr. Hayward, BP can afford to do this. Maybe they should throw in $3 or $4 BILLION. The day will come when that will seem like such an inexpensive price to pay for the damage your company has done.

Don't Waste Your Time With Surveys

I read a blog post this morning by a marketer I respect. The basic premise is that surveys are of value. Michael then gives tips on conducting surveys.

I have to say that I disagree on this one.

Surveys, especially voluntary surveys are of little value.

First the obvious. If a survey is voluntary, you're only going to hear from those who want  to be heard---they are mad or they are uselessly euphoric. The angry will let you ...
