Where's Does Your Time Go?

Chris Wants you to learn from a chess clock.Have you ever considered where your work time really goes? You'd be surprised to see how much time is spent doing totally unproductive "work".

It seems that would be nearly impossible to calculate. Actually, it's easy.

I use a chess clock like the one pictured here. The left side is real work, the right, not work.

When I start something important, like this post, I punch the left side starting the work clock. If I get interrupted ...

Why NOT Re-invent the Wheel?

I hate it when someone says "we don't have to re-invent the wheel."

They are really saying, "let's not do any thinking different or make any improvements. Status quo."  Lazy.

Status quo, the usual way, the way it's always been done is not good enough.

Look. If no one ever took the time to re-invent the wheel, we'd be driving on wooden (I doubt the first wheel was stone) tires. Stupid.

Start today. Reinvent every wheel you can. ...

Don't Waste Your Time With Surveys

I read a blog post this morning by a marketer I respect. The basic premise is that surveys are of value. Michael then gives tips on conducting surveys.

I have to say that I disagree on this one.

Surveys, especially voluntary surveys are of little value.

First the obvious. If a survey is voluntary, you're only going to hear from those who want  to be heard---they are mad or they are uselessly euphoric. The angry will let you ...

Why Some People Subvert Success

Why do some people go out of their way to prevent success? This is a destructive pattern I see at many businesses and organizations. Fix something, improve something, build something and someone wants to take it apart. Why?

There really is only one answer to this: emotional immaturity. I used to resist the idea that someone in management would want ideas to fail. Sure, some workers might resent someone who comes up with a great idea ...

Are YOU a Business?

Quick thought.

Not all of us enjoy the luxury (and pressure) of self-employment.

If you are working for someone else, in a real job, I'd like you to think about an idea. If your job was 'out sourced' to a very efficient and creative company, what would they do differently than you do?

Now, think of yourself as that outside company. You've just contracted to do your 'job'. What changes? What improves? Since you're an outside company, you ...

A Very Important Question

Today I want you to think about a question.

At what point in your business sales process does customer service enter the picture?

If I've just heard about your company and need information, is that "customer" service or "pre-sale"?

Now I want you to think about this. Yeah, yeah. Everyone knows this but I rarely see it in practice. Customer service should be a part of every aspect of your business from product design to marketing to ...

     Chris.
I feel this comes back to the reaction and educating your customer to have positive results from your brand.
A customer does not care that accounting screwed and and sales was great - they have a negative reaction to your brand in Florida - it is the same way they will feel in NY.
This failure of customer focus ties back to the brands relevance of how they are serving and how.
The how being the focus of the reaction that people have to your brand.

A Question for YOU

I want to pose some questions worth considering. YOU will know which question is specifically for YOU.

1. You've just been brought in to run your business as the new CEO. What is the first thing you'd change?

2. You've just been hired for the job you now have. What's the first thing you'd do better than the last guy?

3. You've just taken over a small business that you now own. As the new CEO, should you ...

Confusion and Turmoil

Introduce confusion and with it comes turmoil.

Health care debate.

Obama insists he wants to fix a broken system. We hear about 50 million uninsured people. We hear about people losing their insurance when they lose their job. We hear about people who can't get insurance because of pre-existing conditions. We hear about people being financially ruined from medical bills.

Okay, maybe we do need to fix something.

So why all the tension over trying to fix a ...
