Does the Captain Really Matter?

If your business is in trouble and you can only blame the economy, may I assert the captain of the ship matters most?

Let's consider the Titanic.

A different captain may have refused to sail without adequate life boats.
A different captain might have heeded the warnings of ice-berg sightings and changed course in spite of the pressure to stay on schedule.
A different captain might have halted the ship after it hit the ice-berg (or when the sound was reported) and inspected the ship. Halting the ship could have prevented the sinking as the fast forward motion actually hastened the inflow of water and caused the flooding of the various flood prevention compartments of the hull.
A different captain might have made certain the other ships in the area received a distress call. (Asked for help)
A different captain might have better organized the abandonment of ship---many life boats departed with few people in the panic.

If you're blaming ice-bergs, considering changing styles, captain.
